Kid of the Month

This month we are featuring a couple of the most important monuments of the country, the Taj Mahal and the Charminar.

TAJ MAHAL

TAJ MAHAL is a mausoleum of white marble on the bank of the Yamuna River. It was built by the Mogul Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal from which the name Taj Mahal is derived.

Work on the Taj began in the year 1631. Architects from India, Persia, Central Asia and beyond were instrumental in making the plans. Almost 20,000 labourers worked for 22 years to complete it at a cost of 40 million rupees.

It is considered to be the most beautiful 17th century building in the world and is regarded as a supreme achievement of Mohammedan architecture.

Charminar

CHARMINAR is perhaps the most famous of all Hyderabad's monuments. It was built by Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah in 1591 A.D. The western section houses a mosque that showcases the brilliant craftsmanship of the Qutb Shahi artisans. And all around there is the hustle and bustle of commerce that is uniquely Hyderabadi. The Charminar today stands majestically in the heart of the old city.
