TAJ MAHAL
is a
mausoleum of white marble on the bank of the Yamuna River. It was built by the Mogul
Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal from which the name Taj Mahal is
derived.
Work
on the Taj began in the year 1631. Architects from India, Persia, Central Asia and beyond were instrumental in making
the plans. Almost 20,000 labourers worked for 22 years to complete it at a cost of 40
million rupees.
It is considered to
be the most beautiful 17th century building in the world and is regarded as a supreme
achievement of Mohammedan architecture. |
