TD objects to water supply to Tuni
Mr. Ch. Ayyannapatrudu, Convener, District Wing Telugu Desam Party strongly opposed the supply of six mgd of water to 14 villages under Tuni in East Godavari district. Addressing the newsmen at a press conference on Thursday, he said while Vizag needed 150 mgd water for industrial and domestic
needs, the present supply had fell to 40 mgd due to the failure of southwest monsoons. The local administration failed to provide water supply everyday due to insufficient sources. The city draws its water from Yeleru (which contributes more), Gosthani, Thatipudi, Raiwada, Gambheeram and Mudasarlova reservoirs. He said due to pressure by Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, the superintendent engineer of Rural Water Supply Scheme began diverting six mgd of water to East Godavari district. They have also cut short the supply to Visakha Steel Plant (VSP) due to water crisis.
Mr. Bandaru Satyanarayana Murthy, senior party activist said water cannot be diverted without a government order. The Visakhapatnam Industrial Water Supply Company (VIWSCO) set up by special funds to provide sufficient water to the needs of the Visakhapatnam city only, but not for the other districts. “Water was diverted even without bringing it into the notice of authorities like
VIWSCO and GVMC. Pipelines are also being laid for permanent diversion to Tuni,’’ Murthy said. Raiwada water was also diverted earlier but was stopped with the intervention of TD which threatened to launch an agitation.
