International Recognition for VSP at London

Visakhapatnam Steel Plant has been selected for award of ‘Certificate of Merit’ of ‘Global Human Resource Development Awards- 2010’ by “International Federation of Training and Development Organizations” (IFTDO).VSP is viewed as working to high international standards in Human Resource Development field. VSP was found to focus on initiatives that encourage employees to go that ‘extra mile’ to deliver the performance output.The Judges looked for evidence to demonstrate a sound criterion highlighting ‘what the organization has done and why, as well as assessing the subsequent impact this has had on business and also looked for evidence of ‘innovation and creativity that set new standards and best practices’.  
The award will be presented on 20th April at the 39th IFTDO World Conference to be held in London.Mr. PK Bishnoi, CMD congratulated and complimented VSP collective for the international recognition and the award.

JOINT COASTAL SECURITY AWARENESS CAMPAIGN HELD IN
VIZIANAGARAM AND VISAKHAPATNAM DISTRICTS


The Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and the Andhra Pradesh State Police are undertaking a Joint Coastal Security Awareness Campaign in the districts of Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam, in continuation of the awareness drive to sensitise the local fishermen of their role as the eyes and ears of the security agencies. The four day Campaign that commenced on 23 Mar is scheduled to conclude on Saturday, 27 Mar 10. A team comprising 10 members drawn from the Navy, Coast Guard and Police, led by Sub Lieutenant Neeraj Kumar, covered the entire coast of the two districts.
A series of lectures, presentations, pamphlet distribution and one to one meetings were held in the coastal villages and an opportunity was given to these communities to express their own concerns as regards their security, safety, search and rescue and livelihood. The initiative was well received by the local fishermen who assured the agencies of playing a key role in ensuring security of the coast.

Visakhapatnam topped other districts in the State in the implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), and Chief Minister K. Rosaiah congratulated Collector J. Syamala Rao during a videoconference with Collectors from Hyderabad on Thursday.
The Chief Minister appreciated the district for climbing to the first place during March (in the implementation of the NREGS) after finishing fourth during February and standing at 14 {+t} {+h} position during January. Visakhapatnam stood first by creating jobs for 2.71 lakh people and completing the works with quality and making payments for 99 per cent of the beneficiaries, Mr. Rosaiah said. The Chief Minister appreciated Mr. Syamala Rao for introducing the biometric mobile muster system for noting attendance of beneficiaries. This method had been mentioned during the Assembly session and the Government was thinking of introducing it all over the State, he said. “Visakhapatnam showed that a district can gain top place if its Collector personally supervises implementation of a programme with dedication. Other districts must take Visakhapatnam as an example,” Mr. Rosaiah said during the videoconference.
Minister for Rural Development and IKP Vatti Vasantha Kumar, while congratulating Visakhapatnam district, wanted those districts that were lagging behind in the implementation of NREGS to follow the methods adopted in Visakhapatnam to achieve good result. Frequent reviews could help in eliminating problems and faults, he added. Minister for Panchayat Raj Botcha Satyanarayana, Chief Secretary S.V. Prasad, Commissioner for Rural Development S.S. Rawat, other Ministers and officials participated. Along with Mr. Syamala Rao, GVMC Commissioner V.N. Vishnu, CMD of APEPDCL N. Gulzar, Joint Collector P. Satyanarayana Reddy, Additional JC S. Satyanarayana, CEO of Zilla Praja Parishad P.A. Shoba and other officials were present.

Erection work of Continuous Casting Machine-3 of Stage-II Commences in VSP

Mr. AP Choudhary, Director (Projects) of RINl inaugurated the equipment erection of ‘6-Strand Continuous Casting Machine-3’ of 6.3 expansion project on Thursday. Equipment Erection in CCM-1 and CCM-2 is already in progress. Design, Engineering, Supply, Erection and Commissioning of the 3 Continuous Casting Machines was ordered on the Consortium of M/s Danieli &C, Italy, M/s Danieli India Ltd, Kolkata, M/s MICCO, Kolkata. Mr. SK Poulose, ED (Projects) and Senior Officers of VSP, Dastur Co, Danieli India and MICCO were present

VICE CHIEF OF NAVAL STAFF AT VISAKHAPATNAM

Vice Admiral DK Dewan, AVSM, Vice Chief of Naval Staff, accompanied by Mrs. Ramma Dewan, Vice President, Navy Wives Welfare Association arrived Visakhapatnam on Sunday, 21 Mar 10, on a three-day visit to the Eastern Naval Command. The Flag Officer Called on Vice Admiral Anup Singh, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief at the Headquarters, Eastern Naval Command. Thereafter, he visited the Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), the Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Limited (ISPRL) and Naval establishments. He is also scheduled to undertake a windshield tour of the Dolphin Hill Accommodation Complex later.

Mrs. Ramma Dewan interacted with the members of the NWWA Committee and visited the NWWA facilities at Visakhapatnam in the course of her stay here. Vice Admiral and Mrs. Dewan are scheduled to depart Visakhapatnam on Tuesday, 23 Mar 10.

REAR ADMIRAL VIJAYA KUMAR NAMBALLA TAKES OVER AS
ADMIRAL SUPERINTENDANT NAVAL DOCKYARD

Rear Admiral Vijaya Kumar Namballa, NM took over as Admiral Superintendent, Naval Dockyard (Visakhapatnam) from Rear Admiral Raman Prabhat, AVSM, VSM , at a formal ceremony held at the Naval Dockyard today, 19 Mar 10. Rear Admiral Namballa is a Marine Engineering Specialist and an alumini of National Defence College, New Delhi. He was commissioned in the Indian Navy on 25 Jul 1977. He has held various important appointments in the Indian Navy including Operational, Training, Quality Assurance and Research and Development. For his distinguished service in Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam he was awarded the Nau Sena Medal in 2001. Prior to succeeding Rear Admiral Prabhat as the Admiral Superintendent Naval Dockyard (Visakhapatnam), Rear Admiral Namballa served in the Defence Procurement Board, Ministry of Defence, New Delhi as the Technical Manager (Maritime & Systems). Rear Admiral Raman Prabhat served at Visakhapatnam over the last four years as the Director General, Naval Projects (Visakhapatnam), the Chief Staff Officer (Technical) at the Headquarters, Eastern Naval Command and as the Admiral Superintendant Naval Dockyard (Visakhapatnam) in the preceding 18 months. The Flag Officer on promotion to the rank of Vice Admiral proceeds to Mumbai as the Director General, Naval Project (Mumbai). Rear Admiral Raman Prabhat was decorated with the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal during his tenure at the Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam.

CHIEF OF MATERIAL AT EASTERN NAVAL COMMAND

Vice Admiral Ganesh Mahadevan, AVSM, VSM, Chief of Material, Integrated Headquarters, Ministry of Defence (Navy) arrived Visakhapatnam on a two day visit to the Eastern Naval Command today, 18 Mar 10. During his stay in Visakhapatnam the visiting Admiral presided over the Steering Committee Meeting on Warship Technology and Ocean Engineering at Naval Scientific and Technological Laboratory (NSTL), Visakhapatnam and later visited the Work Centers at NSTL. The Flag Officer is scheduled to depart Visakhapatnam on Friday, 19 Mar 10.

Blood Donation Camp inaugurated by Sri PK Bishnoi, CMD, RINL/VSP

Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Visakhapatnam Steel Plant unit organized the Blood Donation Camp as a part of its CISF Security Week Celebrations. Sri PK Bishnoi, CMD, RINL/VSP inaugurated the Blood Bank today at CISF Barracks. He lauded the services of the CISF personnel in guarding the plant & equipment as well as their valuable contribution for social cause like conducting blood donation camps etc., CMD observed that CISF personnel are the fittest for such noble cause and desired that they should organize many camps like this in the interest of the nation. Sri Bishnoi recollected the VSP efforts in setting up of Blood Bank and also its various Health & Medical camps being conducted for the peripheral villages.

DEATH ONBOARD IN WARSHIP

The Indian Navy regrets to inform the loss of life of Anil Kumar Pradhan, Chief Electrical Artificer Radio, owing to an accident that occurred while carrying out operational tasks onboard Indian Naval Ship Delhi while alongside at Visakhapatnam on 12 Mar 10. A Board of Inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause and circumstances leading to the accident.

INS KALINGA CONDUCTS PAINTING COMPETITION FOR CHILDREN AT BHEEMUNIPATNAM

A Painting Competition for Children was organised by INS Kalinga at the Community Hall of Mangammaripeta near Bheemunipatnam today, 12 Mar 10. INS Kalinga that celebrates its Silver Jubilee later this year has planned several activities all the year round, as part of the Celebrations. The Painting Competition that was held today for the Primary School children of the neighboring villages of Mangammaripeta, Nerellavalasa and Chepala Uppada, is in recognition of the support rendered by these villages.

Surgeon Rear Admiral Manisha Jaiprakash, Command Medical Officer, Eastern Naval Command was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Commodore KLN Chary, Commanding Officer, INS Kalinga and other officers witnessed the Event that had over 90 children participating enthusiastically. The latent talent of these children was showcased in their paintings on the themes of Nature and Environment. Whilst drawing materials and refreshments were distributed among all the participants, a panel of judges will decide on the top three entries and these children will be given their Prizes at a later date.

AIR MARSHAL SUMIT MUKERJI AT ENC

Air Marshal Sumit Mukerji, SC VSM, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Air Command, accompanied by Air Vice Marshal G Burli, VM, Air Officer Commanding Headquarters, MAO of the Indian Air Force arrived Visakhapatnam on Monday, 08 Mar 10, on a two day visit to the Eastern Naval Command. They were received on arrival at Dega by Rear Admiral MT Moraes, Flag Officer Submarines. The Flag Officers later called on Vice Admiral Anup Singh, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief at the Headquarters, Eastern Naval Command.

The Air Marshals attended a briefing on Maritime Air Operations and on the Tactical Exercises presently underway off the East Coast. They departed Visakhapatnam today, 09 Mar 10.

IMMUNISATION DRIVE BY THE NAVY AT MULGADA

As a part of the Community Development Program undertaken by INS Eksila, a Medical Camp for free Immunisation and Vaccination for Children was held today, 05 Mar 10. Over 150 children from the neighbouring villages of Mulgadda and Edhuvanipalem were immunised in the course of the Immunisation Camp that was inaugurated by Vice Admiral Dinesh Prabhakar, Project Director, Ship Building Center (Visakhapatnam). The attendant Medical Team also spoke to the Parents about the importance of First Aid and of immunisation for better protection against various preventable diseases and stressed on the importance of early detection of chronic and communicable diseases.

Apart from Free Medical Camps, the welfare measures initiated in the past under the aegis of the Eastern Naval command include repairs and refurbishment of community halls, anti-malarial fogging/spraying and liaison with local civil authorities for better sanitation, supply of water and electricity to the neighbouring villages.

Acclimatization, Training and Convenience of Working Essential for Construction Workmen: CMD of RINL

Mr. PK Bishnoi, CMD of RINL stated that ‘Acclimatization, Training and convenience of working with safety gadgetry ’ are essential for construction workers for achieving higher safety as they come from poorer background industrial safety in his keynote address at the 39th National Safety Day celebrations in VSP on 4th March, 2010.

Speaking on the occasion, he said that he is deeply concerned at any accident that takes place in VSP and that VSP would interact with National academy of Construction to impart training to the construction workers so that they acclimatize and develop convenience of working with safety equipment for safety at construction sites VSP in acclimatizing to the environment of steel plant expansion activities.

 Mr. D Chandra Sekhar Varma, Joint Chief Inspector of Factories of Andhra Pradesh explained his experience of how ‘Unsafe workers can create accidents in safe environment’ and asserted that the prime responsibility of safety lies with the individual. ‘Knowledge, thought process and attitude of the individual plays a significant role in creating a safe environment’, he added. Mr. Verma released a quarterly news bulletin brought out by Safety Engineering department on the occasion.

Y Manohar, Director (Personnel), Umesh Chandra, Director (Operations), AP Choudhary, Director (Projects), TP Rao, ED (Works), Union Leaders Y Mastanappa, D Adinarayana, N Rama Rao, SEA General Secretary B Srinivas and SC&ST welfare Association Secretary Maturi Srinivasa Rao also spoke and conveyed their messages.

VSP’s Impressive Performance

Despite Lower Net Market Sales Realizations VSP’s Sales Turnover for the year 2009-10 up to February’ 2010 crossed Rs 9000 Crores. It registered a MOU target fulfillment of about 105%.

A significant aspect has been that the sales volume of saleable steel achieved during 2009-10 (up to Feb’10) is about 2.67 million tons surpassing the total saleable steel quantity of 2.62 million tons sold in the entire year of 2008-09. It registered a growth of 20% over the corresponding period.

The thrust has been on ‘value added steel and during the 11 months of 2009-10 VSP sold 19.98 lakh tons of Value added steel compared to 16. 70 lakh tons sold in the corresponding period in 2008-09. Even in ‘value added steel sales’, it surpassed last year’s quantity sold by February. For the entire year of 2008-09 the quantity of Value added steel sold was 19.81 lakh tons.

There was also significant reduction of Inventory of Saleable Steel at the end of the month as compared to beginning of the month.

Mr. PK Bishnoi, CMD of RINL complimented the Works and Marketing Collective for the significant performance.
