TROPHIES AWARDED TO SHIPS OF LOCAL FLOTILLA


Trophies were awarded to Ships of Local Flotilla at an impressive Ceremonial Parade held at the Flotilla Sports Ground at the Naval Dockyard today, 30 Apr 10. Commodore Brian Thomas, Naval Officer-in-Charge (Andhra Pradesh) inspected the Parade comprising personnel drawn from Minesweepers, Landing Craft, Torpedo Recovery Vessels, Fast Attack Craft and Ocean Going Tug. The Event was a culmination of a year that saw the achievement of various operational goals with typical zeal and professional pride. Trophies based on performance of the Flotilla during the year 2009-10 were given away by the Naval Officer-in-Charge (AP). Thirteen ships contested keenly across several categories with INS Kozhikode winning the Best Ship and the Most Innovative Ship. The Other prestigious awards were those of the Best Ship in Small Vessel Category won by INS Astravahini and the Most Spirited Ship that was won by INS Kakinada. The Local flotilla has been operational on the Eastern seaboard for over 20 years and is tasked with the defence of the coastal assets of Andhra Pradesh. To this end, in addition to operational deployments, Regular Coastal Security Awareness Campaigns have been conducted in all the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh. Intensive training of marine police has given the much needed fillip to the nascent organisation and has laid the foundation for an enriching and fruitful cooperation. The Office of the NOIC (AP) is also the nodal agency for interaction with the various oil operators of the Krishna Godavari Basin and the port authorities of all the ports on the AP coast. Operationally the Eastern Local Flotilla is actively involved in minesweeping and mine laying operations off the Eastern seaboard including the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The Flotilla ensures a safe channel for the Fleet Ships to transit through. The flotilla ships remain in a high state of preparedness to counter any threat.

CMD of RINL Compliments VSP’s CISF


Mr. PK Bishnoi, CMD of RINL complimented CISF Fire Service Personnel of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant for their dedication to duty and the hard conditions they have to encounter in order to safeguard the plant.Mr. PK Bishnoi was chief guest at the closing ceremony of ‘National Fire Service Week’ held at the Main Fire Station of VSP.Mr. Bishnoi appreciated the collaborative approach of VSP’ Officials and CISF Personnel in prevention of fire accidents thereby saving human lives and equipments from damage. He also complimented the maintenance collective of VSP for repairing the ‘Hydraulic Platform’ at only 5% of the commercial offer and putting it into operation. During the ceremony officials of VSP who carried the job successfully were rewarded. The Commandant of CISF profusely thanked the VSP’s officials for successful repairing and saving money for the organization. Also prizes were awarded to school children and housewives who won various competitions held in connection with Fire Week.During the ceremony live demonstrations were shown depicting prevention of spread of fire and rescue operations which drew appreciation from children, housewives and employees of VSP.CISF Fire Wing of VSP is one of the modern units duly certified with ISO 9001, 14001 and OHSAS 18001. It has latest gadgets and brave experts to tackle fire accidents and efficient in rescue operations.Commandant CISF of VPT, Senior officials of VSP, Children and families of VSP employees and CISF personnel of VSP were present.

CMD of RINL Gives a Clarion Call for “Cost Control for Prosperity”

Mr. PK Bishnoi, CMD of RINL appreciated the topic of the national seminar on cost control by the Hindi department of VSP as the most apt thing to do in the present circumstances. Mr Bishnoi also pointed out that the cost control has to be both for capital expenditure and revenue related costs. While reduction in capital expenditure would facilitate higher availability of funds for higher growth and expansion, reduction in revenue expenditure would improve profitability and greater investment surpluses. Mr. Bishnoi was chief guest at the concluding session of a national seminar in Hindi on ‘Cost Reduction: Key to Success’ organized by Hindi Cell for executives of PSUs on Tuesday and Wednesday at Centre for HRD in VSP .Mr. Bishnoi asserted that the seminar was organized with the twin objective of discussing technical topics of interest and simultaneously increasing the usage of official usage of Hindi.Dr Ratnakar Pandey, an eminent Hindi Scholar who was guest Speaker complimented VSP for its outstanding performance and excellent usage of Hindi as official language.About 38 participants from organizations of HSL, SAIL, MECON, BHU, NMDC, RSP, Sponge Iron Limited, DCI and BHPV presented technical Papers in Hindi on Cost Reduction.Mr. PK Bishnoi presented awards to the best papers presented in the seminar.Mr. Y Manohar, Director (Personnel) and other officials of VSP were present.

ADMIRAL ARUN PRAKASH AT EASTERN NAVAL COMMAND
Inaugurates NMF Visakhapatnam Chapter

Admiral Arun Prakash, PVSM, AVSM, VrC, VSM (Retd), Former Chief of Naval Staff and Chairman, National Maritime Foundation (NMF) arrived Visakhapatnam today, 27 Apr 10, on a three day visit to the Eastern Naval Command. The visiting Admiral inaugurated the Visakhapatnam Chapter of the NMF at the Maritime Warfare Center (Visakhapatnam) in the evening, in the presence of Vice Admiral Anup Singh, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command and other Naval and Civilian dignitaries. The Admiral also addressed the Officers of the Command at the Samudrika Naval Auditorium. Admiral Arun Prakash is also scheduled to preside over a Seminar on the Eastern Seaboard in the New Millennium - Challenges and Opportunities to be held at the Hotel Taj Gateway on Wednesday, 28 Apr 10. Vice Admiral Anup Singh will deliver the Preamble to the Seminar to be attended by several eminent scholars, professors and luminaries from the Civil and Naval fraternities. Admiral Arun Prakash will depart Visakhapatnam on Thursday, 29 Apr 10.

FLEET EVENING FLING 10 HELD
The annual awards function of Eastern Fleet, the Fleet Evening 2010 (FLING 2010) commemorating the accomplishments of the Fleet over the past year was held in the lawns of Samudrika Naval Auditorium on Friday, 23 Apr 10. The Event was attended by over 4000 personnel of the Eastern Naval Command. The FLING 2010 was conducted under the auspices of the Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet Rear Admiral P Murugesan, VSM. The FLING is the culmination of a year of determined and relentless pursuit for excellence in the professional arena put in by every ship of the Eastern Fleet. The event included an audio visual presentation on the Eastern Fleet activities, and an enthralling entertainment program followed by the award of various coveted trophies keenly contested by the 25 frontline ships of the Eastern Fleet. These trophies, awarded for excellence in various facets of Operations, were given away by the Chief Guest, Vice Admiral Anup Singh AVSM NM, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command. The Best ship trophy was awarded to INS Ranvir, while INS Airavat was adjudged the Most Spirited Ship and INS Khanjar bagged the trophy for Maximum Days at Sea. Over the past year, Eastern Fleet, the Sword Arm of the Navy, has been at the forefront of all operations on the eastern sea board and has witnessed intense activity spanning the entire spectrum of Maritime Operations. Apart from fleet operations in the Bay of Bengal, the fleet also participated in a number of international naval exercises including Malabar 09 with US Navy and SIMBEX 10 with Singapore Navy. The ships of Eastern Fleet also participated in an International Fleet Review at Indonesia and China. In addition, the Eastern Fleet undertook EEZ surveillance and anti piracy patrol off Seychelles and Mauritius to maintain order on the high seas, so that the freedom of global trade can be preserved for the common good of mankind. FLING 2010 was an occasion to acknowledge these spectacular achievements of the Eastern Fleet and to reaffirm the resolve that the Sword Arm remains ever vigilant and committed to meet any challenge covering the entire spectrum of Naval Operations.

FLEET COMMANDER OF SINGAPORE NAVY VISITS ENC
AS SIMBEX-10 CONCLUDES
As SIMBEX-10, the Joint Naval Exercise between Navies of India and the Republic of Singapore drew to a close and the ships of both the Navies returned to harbour for a final summing-up of the Exercise, in a related visit to the Eastern Naval Command, the RSN Fleet Commander, Rear Admiral Joseph Leong arrived Visakhapatnam today, 15 Apr 10. On arrival, the Flag Officer, accompanied by Colonel Glam Hock Koon Tan Kai Hoe, Commanding Officer 185 Squadron of the RSN, called on Vice Admiral Anup Singh, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command. The Indian Navy has expressed satisfaction with the level of mutual confidence and inter-operability that has been achieved through these exercises. SIMBEX, an acronym for Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercises, is an institutionalized series of regular exercises conducted annually between the Indian Navy and the Republic of Singapore Navy. The interaction which commenced with modestly pitched Anti-submarine training in 1994 has grown steadily and impressively over the past 16 years. Apart from two ships of the RSN, namely, Intrepid and Victory, SIMBEX-10 conducted in the Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal from 03 to 15 Apr 10, had seven IN Ships and a submarine that participated in the Exercise including Ranvir, Jyothi, Kora, Mahish, Nirbhik, Nishank and Batti Malv. In addition, A Fokker-50 aircraft of the RSN along with the TU 142M, Kamov, Chetak and Dornier aircraft of the IN, as also the Jaguar Squadron of the IAF also participated in the Exercise. Bilateral interaction was progressed at sea as well as in harbour. Whilst the harbour phase focused on sharing operational experiences through professional interaction, the sea phase concentrated upon the conduct of a plethora of exercises ranging from surface firings and anti-aircraft engagements to anti-submarine warfare exercises and evolutions involving the deployment and coordination of Maritime Patrol Aircraft as well as shore based Fighters. The Indian Navy lays great stress on enhancing and sustaining bilateral ties, as also on improving mutual understanding with regional navies, through exercises such as those of the SIMBEX series. These exercises not only provide immense training value to the Indian Navys sea going personnel but also help in fostering mutual trust and friendship between our nations, adding strength to our commitment and resolve to tackle common challenges within the maritime domain

VSP pays tribute to Baba Saheb Ambedkar


The employees of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant paid rich floral tributes to Bharat Ratna Dr Baba Saheb BR Ambedkar on his 119th Birth Day. In a function organized in Ambedkar Park in Ukkunagaram of VSP on Wednesday the statue of Ambedkar was garlanded by Mr. Y Manohar, Director (Personnel), and K Vidyasagar, CVO, Union Leaders, Representatives of Steel Executive Association and members of SC/ST association.Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Manohar asked the employees and children to follow the basic principles of ‘Educate’ and ‘Organize’ stated by Dr. Ambedkar in their lives and strive for improving the living standards of down trodden.In another function the CISF wing of VSP ‘National Fire Service Week was inaugurated by Mr. TP Rao, ED (Works). Speaking on the occasion Mr. TP Rao complimented the CISF wing for offering exemplary services in safe running of the Plant. Brochures regarding fire safety were released on the occasion. CISF Commandant, senior officials of VSP and officials of CISF, VSP were present.

SUPER ACHIEVERS AWARD CONFERRED ON Y MANOHAR, DIRECTOR (PERSONNEL)

Sri Y Manohar, Director (Personnel), RINL/Visakhapatnam Steel Plant has bagged the prestigious “Indira Super Achievers Award 2010”  for his tremendous achievements in HRD.  The Super Achievers concept attempts to recognise the Talent, Competence and Skills in their respective fields.  Sri. Y. Manohar is the 1st person to received such award from Public Sector Undertakings.The award was instituted by Indira Group of Institutes, Mumbai. The award was presented to Sri Y Manohar at a function held in Indore recently.

SINGAPORE NAVAL SHIPS AT VISAKHAPATNAM
As a part of SIMBEX-10, the ongoing Joint Naval Exercise between Navies of India and the Republic of Singapore in the Bay of Bengal region, two ships of the Singapore Navy, RSN Intrepid and RSN Victory with Commanding Officer 185 Squadron, Colonel Glam Hock Koon Tan Kai Hoe onboard, arrived Visakhapatnam on Saturday, 10 Apr 10. They are scheduled to take part in the next phase of the Exercise to be held off Visakhapatnam from 13 to 15 Apr10. RSN Intrepid is a French-built Delta Class Frigate, under the Command of Lieutenant Colonel Vince Tan Tit Lee, while RSN Victory is a Missile Corvette commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Anthoy Lee Kok Long. Colonel Glam Hock Koon Tan Kai Hoe accompanied by the Commanding Officers of the two ships will call on Rear Admiral P Murugesan, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet. During their stay at Visakhapatnam, the officers and sailors of the Singapore Navy will be engaged in various activities involving professional and social interaction. They will also be visiting places of interest in and around Visakhapatnam that include Kailashgiri, Ramakrishna Beach, Maritime and Kursura Museums. The ships of the two Navies have been exercising regularly with the aim of enhancing cooperation and interoperability between the two navies. The visiting ships are expected to depart Visakhapatnam on conclusion of the Exercise on 17 Apr 10.

DEPUTY CHIEF OF NAVAL STAFF AT VISAKHAPATNAM

Vice Admiral RK Dhowan, Deputy Chief of Naval Staff, accompanied by Mrs. Minu Dhowan arrived Visakhapatnam on Wednesday, 07 Apr 10, on a three-day visit to the Eastern Naval Command. The Flag Officer called on Vice Admiral Anup Singh, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief at the Headquarters, Eastern Naval Command. Thereafter, he visited the Joint Operations Center (Visakhapatnam) and other Naval establishments of the Command.

Mrs. Minu Dhowan interacted with the members of the NWWA Committee and is also scheduled to attend a Milan hosted in her honour. Vice Admiral and Mrs. Dhowan are scheduled to depart Visakhapatnam on 10 Apr 10.

NAVY HELICOTER EVACUATES INJURED POLICEMEN

Responding speedily to an appeal from the State Government of Orissa today, 04 Apr 10, the Indian Navy evacuated casualties from Jeypur village in the Koraput District of Orissa, over 150 kilometers from Visakhapatnam. Following a request from the DIG of Police, Berhampur, a UH 3H helicopter of the Eastern Naval Command airlifted eight casualties, with five of them in critical condition. The eight personnel of the Special Operations Group of Orissa Police were seriously injured earlier in the day when the vehicle they were travelling in ran over a landmine triggering an explosion that killed 10 personnel and injured several others. The patients were brought to Visakhapatnam this evening and are presently undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the city.

CMD of RINL Compliments Its’ Employees

Mr. PK Bishnoi, CMD of RINL complimented the employees for the commendable performance for the concluded year of 2009-10 and for achieving score to get ‘Excellent Rating of MOU with Ministry of Steel’. RINL, the flagship company of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant is on a hat-trick of having recorded a sales turn over of over Rs 10000 Crores for the third consecutive year. Despite lower market net sales realizations the sales turn over for the year 2009-10 is approximately Rs 10,611Crores, the best ever sales turn over since inception. Saleable Steel Sales Volume achieved during 2009-10 is 3.13 million tons compared to 2.62 million tons for the year 2008-09 and registered a growth of 20%. The thrust on Value added steel continued to play a significant role in sales realization. The Value Added Steel Production of 2.4 million tons and sale of Value added Steel products of 2. 35 million tons is best for any year since inception. RINL is at the forefront of the expansion to 6.3 million tons and would the first among other PSUs to bring its expanded capacity on stream. Order placement of all the major packages is already completed and physical work for the Stage-I units are at various stages of completion in the order of commissioning sequence with Piling- 100%, Concreting- 90 %, Structural Fabrication- 93 %, Structural Erection- 76 %, Equipment Supply- 90 % and Equipment Erection-52%. Commissioning activities have already commenced with facilities related to power and Water Systems having been already commissioned. RINL-VSP’s operational efficiency and overall excellence has won the company many accolades like the Prime Minister’s Trophy for the Best Integrated Steel Plant twice and the first Steel Minister’s trophy. Also the company has been recognized by CII for Significant Achievement in its journey towardsexcellence. Some Major Awards during the year are the Udyog Ratan Award to Mr. PK Bishnoi, RINL’s CMD, Energy Efficient Unit Award conferred by CII, Indira Gandhi Rajabhasha Puraskar for its outstanding contribution in implementation of Official Language and Gold and Bronze Medals at ‘International Convention on Quality Control Circles Conventions’ at Philippines. RINL-VSP was recognized as ‘Indias Best Companies to Work for’ by the Great Place to work Institute and Economic Times. RINL-VSP is the first steel Plant to achieve ‘CMMI- Level 3 Certificate by SEI, USA. Recently it has been selected for Global HRD Award by International Federation Training and Development Organizations, London. Addressing senior executives at a function organized on the occasion at Multipurpose Hall of Ukkunagaram of VSP, Mr. Bishnoi called the executives to strive hard for expanding RINL to 16/20 million tons and to work for ensuring raw material security, to be productive and cost competitive. He expressed optimism that as in the past VSP’s collective would rise to the occasion and would come out successfully.
