“Mahatma Gandhi was the reason for democracy to
take roots in India”, said Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Mr. S. Jaipal Reddy addressing a gathering at a seminar jointly organized by Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) and Gandhi Peace Centre-Visakhapatnam as part of the celebrations to mark the 75th anniversary of Dandi March at Hotel Daspalla on the 26th of March, 2005. |
Mr. Jaipal Reddy disagreed with the argument that the British were responsible for democracy in India. Defending the above statement Mr. Reddy gave illustrations of the countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Myanmar etc where British ruled but democracy did not take roots. He said that it was Mahatma Gandhi who provided largest training exercise for democracy in India with his popular movements like Dandi March in which lakhs of congress workers faced brutal oppression without resorting to counter violence. This was the main reason for democracy to sustain in India, he added.
APCC, President, Dr. K. Kesava Rao, chaired the seminar. The Minister for Commercial Taxes, Konathala Ramakrishna, Mayor Ms. Rajana Ramani and others were present. |
