Mahatma Gandhi visited Visakhapatnam (Vizagpatam as it then was known) five times in the span of 26 years (between 1921-1946). Around Gandhi Jayanti (2nd of October) is a good time to remember one such visit, on 28th of April, 1929, when he was here to promote the 'Khadi Movement'. He arrived by The Mail (a train) and alighted at the Waltair Railway Station with thousands of cheering followers welcoming him. He stayed at the 'Ankitham House' (in the picture) at Alipur, now better known as Allipuram, as a guest of Shri. A.V. Bhanoji Row. Incidentally, this is the present day location of Dolphin
Hotel. |
