The foundation stone for the Rs. 333 crore project for storing Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in an underground cavern was laid in Visakhapatnam by Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Ram Naik. This project is the first of its kind in South East Asia.
Mangalore on the west coast and Visakhapanam on the east coast are the two strategic locations of these cavern storages in India. The new facility would benefit the country by reducing transportation costs by importing LPG in larger ships and would address the LPG needs of Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and Chattisgarh.
This project is being implemented by the South Asia LPG Company Private Limited (SA LPG), which is a 50-50 joint venture between Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and Total, the French oil giant. The project is expected to be completed by June 2006.
