The Swarna Bharati Indoor Stadium and the Port Indoor Stadium were a beehive of activity with more than 500 boys and girls from 32 States showing their skills since Monday when the competition part of the 29th National sub-junior championships commenced.
Visakhapatnam hosted the championships twice in the past. But this time, the arrangements and infrastructure are of international standards with Hova courts laid at both the venues. The Swarna Bharati stadium got a facelift thanks to the championships.
Game one was of high quality from the beginning as best players in the under-13 and under-15 categories from each State, apart from those who played in international events, participated.
Before the finals on Thursday, the championships witnessed several seeded players making their exit.
This championship will help the Badminton Association of India choose the Indian junior team for international events to be held during the next few months. It would also help the association identify young talent.
Arrangements
The Visakhapatnam District Badminton Association, with the support of the AP Badminton Association, accepted the BAI offer to conduct the meet at short notice after Arunachal Pradesh expressed its inability to host it due to some reasons.
In spite of the short time left with it, the organising committee was able to complete the arrangements and provide 200 rooms in hotels for players.
It also provided a vehicle for each State team for transport to the venue and back to hotel.
Parents of local players received the teams at the railway station and escorted them to the hotel arranged for them.
