The Vizag Badminton League, designed on the format of the Indian Badminton League and leagues for other games, provided an opportunity for the local players to exhibit their talent once again.
For the youngsters and also for all those who played in the league it was a different experience of competing with players of different age groups as each team, owned by a franchise, has players who participated in the international events, veteran World championships, National championships and State championships. There are many in the city who played in these meets and the District Badminton Association’s idea of starting the VBL met with success.
Each team in the colours of its franchise and the format of the tournament made the VBL interesting. Most of the league matches were very close affairs and the final, between Waltair Warriors and Doctors’ Dragons went to the wire, with the former clinching the issue in the last match of the tie.
The other teams that participated in the event were Steel City Kings, Gajuwaka Gladiators and Vizag Smashers. The VBL was sponsored by One Stop 4U Private Limited. It has a total prize money of Rs. 1.7 lakh. Secretary of VDBA R. Srinivas was happy that the VBL has created the desired impact on the players and spectators.
The young K.R.K. Charith, who played for Doctors’ Dragons stood out in the VBL winning all the matches he played.
