BORRA CAVES |
The
Borra Caves that are located about 90 kms. from Visakhapatnam, enroute to Araku Valley
are a fantasy in limestone. Dating back to a million years, they present a breathtaking display of naturally sculptured splendour, in superb sets and
stalagmite formations. Thousands of visitors, particularly students and tribals from far of places throng the caves to make offerings to Lord
Shiva seen in the form of natural stone lingas. The tribals celebrate a fair on Maha Shivaratri day in March every year. At several places inside the caves the path has been blocked by outgrowing calcium
carbonate stones, even as they present marvellous shapes and forms. At places stalagmite and stalactite have joined together forming huge pillars.
Crystal white calcium stones are seen in various forms, a hooded serpent with its mouth open, different human shapes, Narada with its
Thambura, Lord Brahma the creator the Radha-Krishna pair and Nandi the (bull). The caves were illuminated by
the A.P Tourism in 1993. |
