In all, 58 high-end laptops and an Apple iPad were recovered from two Navy personnel in 50 cases of laptop thefts on Sunday.
Mohammad Shakeel Ahmed (35) had stolen nearly 100 high-end laptops valued at over Rs.25 lakh from students staying in hostels at MVP Colony and other parts of the city during the last two years. He then sold the stolen laptops to Navy personnel in the city.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) T. Ravi Kumar Murthy said that Ahmed was arrested on June 11 this year by the MVP police led by Inspector (Crimes) K.S.N. Konda and Sub-Inspector M. Bharath Kumar Raju.
Based on the confession of Ahmed that he sold nearly 60 laptops to two Navy personnel, the police served notices on Sudheer Kumar Beniwal, a resident of 104 Area near Marripalem, and Deewan Singh, who had worked in the ENC and transferred to Mumbai, to produce the laptops they had purchased from Ahmed. Responding to the notices, the two employees produced 58 laptops and one iPad.
The DCP said that they would arrest the Navy personnel after obtaining permission from the authorities concerned.
