According to DCP (law and order) C.M. Trivikram Varma, the seven-member gang indulged in stunts and racing on Beach Road near Appughar at about 1.30 a.m. on Sivaratri day.
They caused a lot of inconvenience to the passers-by and a complaint was lodged by one of them at Dial 100. But before the police team could reach the spot, they fled the spot.
“But based on video footage, we arrested them on Friday and booked them for negligent driving,” said the DCP.
It is learnt that the bikers move to isolated spots in the city such as Ozone Valley layout and Bheemunipatnam road, late in the night to conduct races and practise bike stunts. “We have identified a few groups and spots and will take preventive steps,” said the DCP.
On the late reaction by the police, after receiving a call at Dial 100, the DCP said that most of the force was put on bandobust duty, as part of the Sivaratri celebrations across the city, and importantly, when a Rakshak (beach mobile) vehicle was moving towards the spot after being alerted by the Control Room, it was attacked with stones.
“The windshield was damaged in the attack and taking the advantage of the darkness, the miscreants fled the place. But upon investigation it was found that Potti Ramkrisna and Vasupalli Sagar, both from Peda Jalaripeta were involved in the attack,” said the DCP. The duo was arrested on Friday.
