State Commission for Protection of Child Rights on Thursday directed the district Collector to submit detailed enquiry into alleged racket involved in selling of unwanted babies in the city by January 7.
In a suo motu notice issued by the Commission, its members S. Balaraju, M. Sumitra and S. Muralidhar Reddy also asked the Collector to submit the action taken report on the racket in which a nurse was also involved.
Appreciating the immediate action taken by the district administration, the Commission asked the authorities to immediately active child protection mechanism.
Mr. Balaraju said that as per the reports, the racketeers were giving shelter to women seeking abortion in some apartments in the city till the delivery of the baby and later offering them some amount in exchange of the new-born.
