Yerra Eswara Rao, wanted in land-grab cases, was arrested here on Thursday. He had been on the run ever since registration of two cases against him by the PM Palem police on August 31. Eswara Rao was charged with trespassing and occupying 86 cents of land belonging to B. Appala Raju, C. Ramana, and P. Niranjan in Anandapuram village by obtaining a fraudulent general power of attorney (GPA) from Nimmala Venkata Rao, and registering the land in his favour on April 20 this year. Adopting a similar modus operandi, he had occupied 27 cents of land belonging to P. Ramu in Anandapuram village.
The police first nabbed Nimmala Venkata Rao who had signed the GPA. Upon questioning, Venkata Rao said that he had no connection with the land in question and that he was paid by Eswara Rao to do so, said DCP (Law and Order) C.M. Trivikram Varma.
These cases apart, Eswara Rao has 13 cheating cases pending against him.
Madhurawada ACP Ravi Babu said that among the 13 cases were the ones filed by a few prominent persons, including brother of TDP MLA Vasupalli Ganesh.
“He is accused of cheating the MLA’s brother to the tune of Rs. 1.5 crore by taking advance and not registering the land,” said Mr. Ravi Babu.
In all, Eswara Rao had amassed Rs. 7 crore from all the 13 cases, said the ACP.
Off late, Madhurawada, PM Palem, and Anandapuram have gained notoriety for land-grabbing. In all, 60 cases have been booked and 42 arrests made so far this year in these areas.
