Man held in extortion case: |
 The police cracked a case of attempted extortion and arrested a person here on Tuesday.The accused, Basa Easwar Reddy, called a doctor in the Gajuwaka area to part with Rs.2 crore, failing which he threatened to kidnap and kill his family members one by one.
Dr. K.V. Raman, founder of Simhagiri Nursing Home, received the first call on October 22. Easwar Reddy then demanded a sum of Rs. 2 crore.
Later, after a bit of negotiation, he settled for Rs.1 crore. Finally, on November 1, he asked the doctor to bring the first instalment of Rs.50 lakh to a place near GAIL office on November 2 evening, said DCP (Zone- II) G. Ramgopal Naik.
The doctor approached the police on November 1. After registering a complaint, a special team was formed under the supervision of Dr. Naik.
As planned, on Monday, the doctor waited at the designated spot with a bag stuffed with paper bundles. At about 6 p.m., the accused came on a motorbike. While he was taking the bag, the police team in mufti that was lying in wait near the bushes nabbed him.
Dr. Naik said that the accused was known to Dr. Raman as he was their family doctor. Moreover, Easwar Reddy’s brother had worked as river for Dr. Raman in the past.
The accused, who works as technician with contractors in Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, was earlier caught in a job fraud case for collecting money from various people promising to provide jobs to them in the VSP.
Typical of extortion operations shown in movies, Easwar Reddy had obtained a SIM card by furnishing duplicate ID proofs from a shop near APSRTC Complex and was calling the doctor using it. But by mistake he once made a call from his original SIM number, and that proved to be his nemesis, said the DCP.
Using cell tower locations and CDR (call data record), the police team monitored his position and finally laid a trap to nab him.
He was booked under IPC Section 384 for extortion and Section 506 for criminal intimidation. |
