Principal Special judge for CBI cases, Visakhapatnam, T. Surya Rao on Friday convicted and awarded sentence of two years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs. 2,000 on the accused Bankapalli Janardhana Rao, the then head assistant, General Section, Traffic Department, Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT).
The CBI officials said Janardhana Rao had demanded a kickback of Rs. 6,000 and initially accepted a part of the bribe of Rs. 2,000 for issuing original ship repairing licence to a contractor for his firm VCS Enterprises for undertaking repairs to the ships arriving at VPT.
Janardhana Rao was caught by the CBI officials when he was demanding and accepting the remaining bribe amount of Rs. 4,000 from the complainant. After conducting regular trial, the court pronounced judgment convicting the accused for the offences punishable under Sections 7 and 13 (2) read with 13(1)(d) of PC Act, 1988 and ordered that sentences imposed on the accused shall run concurrently.
