A 16-year-old Intermediate second year student allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan at her home in Anakapalle near here late on Tuesday night.
Suicide note
The police recovered a suicide note in which the girl stated that she was taking the extreme step as she had felt insulted after her college-mate slapped her in public after an altercation. She reportedly accused the college management for scolding her rather than taking action against the student who slapped her.
The girl was identified as Malla Dharani, a student of CEC at a private junior college.
According to Anakapalle (town) Inspector G. Chandra, on June 24 the girl along with a few other friends reportedly passed some snide remarks against one S. Ganesh, a second year MPC student of the same college for failing in the examination. Angered by the remarks, Ganesh reportedly slapped Dharani. Having come to know of the incident, the college management reportedly warned both students. According to the police, Dharani’s parents did not know about the incident and came to know only after reading the suicide note. While the parents of the girl blamed the college management for not taking corrective steps against the boy and that had depressed their daughter, the police said that the management should have informed the parents of both, as they would have counselled their children.
However, sources said that the college management intentionally did not inform the parents, as the girl belonged do a dominant caste of the region and the boy was a Dalit. Fearing backlash, they had kept the incident under wraps.
Investigation is on
A case under Section 306 was registered. The body was sent for post-mortem examination. Sources said that Ganesh was being questioned by the police and further investigation is on.
