According to One Town Police Station SHO, Ilyas Mohammed, rice pulling coin cheating case is an old offence, wherein, the offenders dupe gullible persons , by making them believe that the coin is an ancient coin during the Ramayana or Mahabharata period and has unique qualities such as it can attract rice just like a magnet attracts iron.
The offenders make the victim believe that by keeping such a coin at home one would become prosperous.
In this case, the four accused sold such a coin to Mallidi Rama Reddy of Anaparti village in East Godavari district for Rs. 50 lakh.
“When Mallidi Rama Reddy came to know that the entire thing was a fraud, he lodged a police complaint. And basing on that the One Town Team nabbed the four accused,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police (East Zone) D.N. Mahesh.
He also informed that apart from the four arrested a few others were also involved and the police are on the lookout.
The One Town SHO said that the main accused Satish Kumar was himself a victim of the coin. “After being cheated once, he carefully designed a plan to make big money by selling the coin to someone else,” Mr. Ilyas told The Hindu .
In fact, the victim Rama Reddy was not doing financially well and borrowed about Rs. 26 lakh from another friend to buy the coin.
ACP Mahesh, cautioned that people should not fall for superstitious beliefs and fall prey to such gangs.
