Indias first international volleyball coach S. Kodandaramaiah, died here at a private hospital in the early hours of Thursday (20-12-2018), after a brief illness. He was 80.
Born in Senagapadu village near Nandigama of Krishna district, he rose to become an ace volleyball coach in India and worked as sports faculty in Andhra University here. He produced several top volleyball stars of the country and was also the chief coach of the Volleyball Federation of India for a long time.
Kodandaramaiah also endeared himself to sports administrators and played a key role in the activities of Andhra Pradesh Olympic Association where he was king maker and was instrumental in making late MVVS Murthy, former MP, as APOA president in the mid-1980s. He also took upon himself to promote other sports and encouraged weight-lifters like MV Manikyalu who won a gold in the Commonwealth Games in New Zealand in 1985 and Karanam Malleswari, who was the first woman to win Olympic bronze medal in weightlifting.
