Our artist for the
month of October 2002 to March 2003, is Ms. Monika Rekhi. Ms. Rekhi has
been in the 'City of Destiny' for more than a year now and says that her
sojourn to this city has given her the time and space to indulge in
activities that were always close to heart, but for which she was not able
to find the time, like Hindustani Classical music and painting.
She was in Chennai before she came to this scenic city. While in Chennai,
she was single-handedly managing 'Ambience' a store that dealt exclusively
with 'Good Earth' products, more specifically, beautiful things for your interiors - like crockery,
pottery, linen, comforters, other rugs and riches and even metal
furniture, for which Monika has given a few sketches and subsequently designs
to. All
these involve a keen eye for co-ordination and colour, talents, which have been lying
latent for a while. This comes out quite vividly in her work, that right
now consists of charcoal sketches and water colours. Formulating a style
entirely her own, that combines subtle hues and shades, Monica thoroughly enjoys what she does and puts no
pressures on herself. She would like to move on to oil pastels soon.
She has been going for art classes to Ms. Jumana Topiwala, to give that final flourish
to her art work as well as for learning new techniques and styles. Just recently, her paintings were on display in a two-day
exhibition at the WelcomHotel Grand Bay.
Ms. Monika is the
wife of Mr. Kuljit. S. Rekhi.
