Our artist for the month of March
& April 2002 is
Mrs. Sudha, a native of Vizag.
She was inspired by her mother, who also happens to be her role model.
Mrs. Sudha has an inborn talent and flare for embroidery and she started
this at a very young age. She joined
Shramik Vidhya Peeth in 1990, to make her passion formal, trained for 6 months and
then became an instructor for 3 months. This is where she got a chance
to keenly observe the
talents of some of the teenage girls, from the nearby slums (Jalaripet) in
her class, who were being trained
under her supervision.
She then started her embroidery workshop with the help of 3 girls in an
annexure at her house. She has now expanded her business and with 30
girls in hand, has taken up a separate premises.
The girls love to work for her because she gives 50% of the her profits to them.
The different types of embroidery she usually does are
* Cutch work * Long & short
* Applique work
* Kanta work
* Dharwadi
* Mirror work (light and heavy)
The weaves she works on could be cotton, light or heavy silks, khadi (silk or
cotton), tusser.
She stitches on frocks, sarees,
blouses, ghagra cholis, kurthas, bedspreads, cushion covers
etc.
