BLOOD DONATION CAMP BY THE NAVY : A Blood Donation Camp in collaboration with the Blood Bank of King George Hospital (KGH) was organised as part of Navy Week Celebrations at the Naval Dockyard Dispensary today, 25 Nov 09. Rear Admiral Raman Prabhat, Admiral Superintendent Naval Dockyard (Visakhapatnam) inaugurated the Camp. There was an overwhelming response from among uniformed and non-uniformed personnel, including ladies of the Naval community. Nearly 300 personnel turned up to donate Blood and bridge the projected 40 percent gap between demand and supply of the life-giving fluid.

Dr MVRJ Somayajulu, Superintendent KGH, extended his cooperation by providing the services of the hospital blood bank. Addressing the gathering at the inaugural function, Dr I Eswari Devi, Medical Officer, Blood Bank, KGH stressed on the need to build awareness about voluntary blood donation. She spoke of how the existing shortfall of about 30 to 40 % can only be made good through donations by healthy adults three to four times a year. Speaking on the occasion, Rear Admiral Prabhat reiterated the importance of the Donation and of Navys continued commitment to the cause of the Societal Healthcare.

Revised Schedule for Navy Mela: The Navy Mela has been rescheduled to commence on 27 Nov 09. The timings will now be from 1 PM to 10 PM on 27 and 30 Nov (Friday and Monday) and from 10 AM to 10 PM over the weekend i.e. on 28 and 29 Nov 09. As a part of the Navy Week, three major ships of Eastern Fleet will be open to visits by organised groups of school children on 27 Nov 09 and to general public on 28 and 29 Nov 09 from 9 AM to 5 PM. Personnel visiting ships are advised not to carry hand bags, camera, tape recorder and other electronic goods as these will not be allowed inside the Naval Dockyard due to reasons of security. The entry to ships will be from Pallava gate, which is located near the Pipe Line Junction near INS Satavahana.

 
FOC-IN-C SOUTH AT VISAKHAPATNAM : Vice Admiral KN Sushil, AVSM NM ADC, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command, accompanied by his wife Mrs. Letha Sushil, President, Navy Wives Welfare Association (Southern Region) arrived Visakhapatnam on Tuesday, 24 Nov 09, on a three day visit to the Eastern Naval Command. They were received on arrival at INS Dega by Rear Admiral Karambir Singh, Chief of Staff, Eastern Naval Command.

Vice Admiral Sushil inspected a fifty men Guard paraded in his honour at the Command Headquarters and returned Call on Vice Admiral Anup Singh, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command. The Flag Officer later visited INS Satavahana and accompanied by Mrs. Sushil, undertook a windshield tour of the Dolphin Hill Married Accommodation Complex. Mrs. Letha Sushil visited the NWWA Kendra and interacted with the members of the NWWA Committee in the course of her stay here. The Admiral is scheduled to visit the Shipwright School (Visakapatnam) prior departure on Thursday, 26 Nov 09.

BHAGAWAN SRI SATHYA SAI BABA’S 84th BIRTH DAY CELEBRATED WITH LOVE AND FERVOUR” :

Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s 84th Birth day was celebrated with utmost devotion, love and fervor on Monday at Sri Sathya Sai Vidya Vihar School and “Sai Prema Sadan”. School children sang bhajans on this happy occasion and prayed for the global peace and harmony and well being of the mankind. Cake was cut by the school children on the occasion. Students, Principal, staff and parents participated in the celebrations.

Earlier in the morning, Omkaram, Suprabhatham and Nagara sankirthna was carried out in which devotes took out a rally by singing Bhajans. At the ‘Prema Sadan”, Sri Sathya Sai Vratham was performed in which more than 1000 devotees participated with devotion. Early in the morning, 144 Amruthakalasams (set consisting of essential daily commodities like 10 kg of rice, one kg of dal, tamarind and dry mirchi) were distributed to the poor and needy.

2000 Oranges were distributed to the in-patients of various hospitals like KGH, Victoria Genaral Hospital, TB Hospital and Mental Hospital.1000 laddus were presented to the prisoners of Central Jail and 400 laddus were distributed to school children of Blind school at Sagar Nagar and Yendada. 150 laddus were distributed to the deaf and dumb children at Lawson’s bay colony and Sagarnagar. 160 sarees and blankets were presented to the blind and needy persons, today.

Later in the evening,a spiritual discourse was delivered by Dr.KS Ratnakar, Chairman, Global Medical Education & Research Foundation, Global Hospitals, Hyderabad enthralled the audience. Musical programme by the renowned playback, All India Radio and TV artiste Sri BA Narayana and party has attracted the rapt attention of the huge gathering.

 
NAVY MELA BEGINS ON THURSDAY, 26 NOV :
The ongoing Navy Week celebrations comprise various multifaceted activities that serve to exhibit the might of the Navy as well as provide interactive, entertaining and learning experience to all Vizagites. One of the major functions held during this period, the Navy Mela, organised by INS Satavahana, is being conducted over a four-day period from 26 to 29 Nov 09 at the Command Navy Mela Grounds. The Naval units showcasing their activities this year include the Eastern Fleet, the Local Flotilla, Submarine Base INS Virbahu and Submarine Maintenance Unit, the Naval Dockyard, INS Kalinga, INS Circars, Naval Hospital Kalyani, Naval Armament Depot, Naval Wives Welfare Association and Sankalp (the Special Education and Advisory Centre for Children).

The Navy Mela also has a large participation from private commercial and non-commercial agencies as well as NGOs. A number of financial institutions, consumer durables, dealers in electronics, IT firms and educational institutions are also expected to use the opportunity to showcase their merchandise. The highlight of the Mela is the Amusement Park, where the young and old can enjoy themselves with a plethora of games and joy rides. An orchestra is also slated to perform at the Mela grounds in the evenings. Renowned hoteliers from Vizag with a variety of mouth-watering delicacies will be catering to the palates at the food courts.

The Navy Mela has traditionally been a meeting ground for Vizagites and the Navy. as it provides a unique avenue to explore different facets of the Navy while enjoying themselves with adventure, amusement, shopping and more.

REAR ADMIRAL KARAMBIR SINGH TAKES OVER AS CHIEF OF STAFF OF EASTERN NAVAL COMMAND : Rear Admiral Karambir Singh took over as the Chief of Staff, Eastern Naval Command from Vice Admiral Satish Soni today, 23 Nov 09. In the course of his distinguished career, Rear Admiral Karambir Singh has held various Command, Staff and Operational Appointments.

Commissioned on 01 Jul 1980, Rear Admiral Karambir Singh is a helicopter pilot and has flown the Chetak Search and Rescue helicopter and the Kamov 25 and 28 Anti Submarine Warfare helicopters.

He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and the Defence Services Staff College. He has undergone the Naval Higher Command Course at College of Naval Warfare, Mumbai. He has commanded the Coast Guard Patrol Craft CGS Chandbibi, Missile Corvette INS Vijaydurg and the Missile Destroyers INS Rana and INS Delhi. He has also commanded the Naval Air Station Kunjali II, a helicopter base at Mumbai. The Rear Admiral has held various important Staff Appointments including that of the Director Naval Air Staff at Integrated Headquarters, Ministry of Defence (Navy), and as the Fleet Operations Officer, Western Fleet. He has also done tenures as Directing Staff at the Defence Services Staff College and at the College of Naval Warfare.

Sri Y MANOHAR, National President, ISTD felicitated : Sri Y. Manohar, Director (Personnel), Visakhapatnam Steel Plant and National President, Indian Society for Training & Development(ISTD) was felicitated by the 4 professional bodies viz., Indian Society for Training & Development (ISTD), National Institute for Personnel Management (NIPM), Visakha Management Association (VMA), National HRD Network (NHRDN) at a function held at Hotel Daspalla on 18th November, 2009.The felicitation programme was organized by the professional bodies on Sri Y. Manohar’s election as National President, ISTD.

Sri Manohar has 36 years of rich varied experience in Personnel Management, Human Resources Management, Marketing and has carried out 1 million (10 lakh hours) hours of training, so far. It may please be noted that Mr. Y. Manohar is the first person to head a Professional Body at National Level from Visakhapatnam . Another significant achievement of Sri Y. Manohar is his election as Governing Body member of the prestigious International Federation of Training and Development, Geneva .

On this occasion, a guest lecture on “Reflections on Organisational Effectiveness” was delivered by Prof. Vinayshil Gautam, Fellow of Royal Asiatic Society- FRAS ( London ), A Al-Sager Chair Professor of Management, IIT, New Delhi . Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Vinay Sheel Gowtam analysed the problems faced by Managers in India with regard to effectiveness and compared the scenario with that of Chinese. He also touched the latest developments in performance measurements, and explained coping strategies, intra psychic needs etc., customer delight is the touch stone for success, he said. Prof. Vinayshil Gautam described Sri Manohar as a symbol of effectiveness.

PRATIBIMB - 09 PAINTING COMPETITION HELD BY ENC : As a part of the host of activities scheduled to culminate in the Navy Day celebrations on 04 Dec 09, the Fleet Maintenance Unit of the Eastern Naval Command organised Pratibimb-09, a Painting Competition for children from schools of Visakhapatnam today, 15 Nov 09, at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium, VPT Sports & Cultural complex. The event was graced by Surgeon Rear Admiral Manisha Jayprakash, Command Medical Officer, Eastern Naval Command. Shri Ravi Shankar Patnaik, Head of Department, Fine Arts at Andhra University was the Guest of Honour on the occasion.

Over a thousand children from 92 different schools including Kendriya Vidyalayas, Municipal, Naval and Private schools took part in the Event. The competition was held for children under three different categories of Sub-Junior, Junior and Senior Groups. Themes of Lighthouse and An Evening at the Beach were given beforehand to the Sub-Junior Group. The themes for the other groups given at the venue included Indian Navy- a Three Dimensional Force and Indian Navy an Adventurous Service for the Juniors, and Indian Navy Safeguarding Sea Lines of Communication and Indian Navy in Combating Terrorism for the Seniors.

Following to the enthusiastic response from the previous years, children from Special Schools were invited once again to take part in the Event. The 60 children that participated in this category competed in two groups of speech/hearing impaired, who were given the themes of Warships at Sea and Beaches of Visakhapatnam, and the differently-abled who were free to paint on any topic of their choice. A panel of four eminent artists from the Naval community evaluated the paintings and short-listed best paintings in each category. Awards for the Winners will be presented on 18 Nov 09 onboard an Indian Naval Ship during the Day at Sea program.

SPECIAL CHILDREN VISIT INS JALASHWA ON CHILDREN'S DAY : Commencing the Navy Week-2009 celebrations at Visakhapatnam on the Children's Day, INS Jalashwa, a Landing Platform Dock, aptly hosted special children from various schools of Visakhapatnam today, 14 Nov 09. Mrs Meenu Prabhakar, wife of Rear Admiral Dinesh Prabhakar, NM, VSM, Project Director Ship Building Center (Visakhapatnam) and Mrs. Medha Murugesan, wife of Rear Admiral P Murugesan, VSM, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet, graced the occasion. They interacted with over 143 Special children including wheel chair-bound children and 40 faculty members from 'Sankalp, Arunodaya Special School, Lebenshilfe, Omkar and Lions School for Deaf, Sunflower Special School, Bethany School and Pavani Institute.

The children were given a guided tour of the ship and a feel of the nautical way of life including a live demonstration of flight deck movements, display of Gemini craft and the operation of Ramp. Photographs were also displayed on photo boards apprising them of the Fleet activities undertaken all year round. Thereafter the children exhibited their cultural talents through a short variety entertainment programme. The magic show and the singing competitions organised by the ship followed by a sumptuous meal onboard had the children thoroughly enjoying themselves. The Chief Guest Mrs. Meenu Prabhakar gave away prizes to the children who participated actively in the competitions. All children were given T shirts, caps and gifts by the Eastern Fleet, making their visit even more memorable.

Eastern Naval Command Athletics championship 2009-10 conducted at Command Stadium, Visakhapatnam by INS Satavahana from 10 to 13 Nov 09, concluded today, 13 Nov 09. This was a Mega Event in the Sporting Calendar of the Eastern Command, comprising a total of 24 Individual/ Team Events including the Marathon, 20 kms Walk, Decathlon and Tug of War. More than 150 athletes from six teams participated in the championship spread over four days.
The Championship was won by the Fleet B Team with 152 points and Fleet A Team, after a close contest was declared the Runners up with 151 points. A Jangir EAR5 from Fleet B Team was declared the Best Athlete of the Command. The Tug of War Competition was won by Fleet A Team. The closing ceremony was held at 1600 hrs on 13 Nov 09 wherein the highlight was a thrilling skydiving performance by the Marine Commandos (East) Team. Commodore AK Saxena, General Manager (Refit), Naval Dockyard (Visakhapatnam) who was the Chief Guest on the Occasion gave away prizes to the Winners.

A one day IT Security Seminar covering the fields of communication, surveillance and physical security aspects was conducted at the Eastern Naval Command today, 12 Nov 09. Rear Admiral AV Subhedar, Chief Staff Officer (Technical), Eastern Naval Command inaugurated the Seminar attended by a large number of IT and security Officers as well as System administrators of the Command and personnel from the HCL Infosystems Limited, including Mr. George Paul, Executive Vice President, Mr. CT Bhadran, Associate Vice President, Mr. V Rajendran, Senior Vice President and Mr. R Ravi, Vice President.

Addressing the gathering of over 120 officers and men, Rear Admiral Subhedar highlighted the unprecedented growth in the field of IT and the way it has occupied centre stage in improving the efficiency of any organisation. He spoke of the mutual benefits to be accrued by coming together of the Navy and the Private Firms, as the lead time, operational costs and infrastructural requirements in the realization of software applications are minimal and the benefits manifold.. He said that the need of the hour was to consolidate on the existing infrastructure and talent, step up the outputs in quick time and sustain thereafter. He also acknowledged the partnership being successfully executed by the Navy and M/S HCL.

Several technical papers related to Systems Integration, Security Systems, Enterprise Information Security, Infrastructure Optimisation and Green Practices were presented on the Occasion by the representatives from the IT industries and the Eastern Naval Command as well. The papers aroused keen interest as they consisted of case studies, solutions, guide lines and products to the problems frequently encountered by the ships and other units with respect to IT security.

Speaking as Chief Guest at the Valedictory Function of ‘Vigilance Awareness Week’ organized by Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, Sri Vishnu complimented RINL-VSP for being a ‘Role Model’ in developing and following systems and processes for excellence in corporate governance and delivering ‘Quality Products and Services’ to customers and thereby winning prestigious award

A Kaleidoscopic Grand Finale befitting the grandeur of the mega event Kalanjali - 09 was held at the Samudrika Naval Auditorium on 30th October, 2009, wherein the stars truly had descended at the Valedictory function of the Inter School Cultural Festival. The Chief Guest Vice Admiral Satish Soni, Chief- of-Staff, Eastern Naval Command and Guest of Honour Mrs. Payal Soni were welcomed by the cheer group to the accompaniment of the school band.

The Naval Flight Safety Seminar 2009 was held today, 04 Nov 09 at Maritime Warfare Center (Visakhapatnam). The Annual Event held at all the three Naval Commands on a rotational basis was conducted by INS Dega under the aegis of Headquarters, Eastern Naval Command. The Seminar was inaugurated by Vice Admiral Anup Singh, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command. Several papers on topics having a direct bearing on flight safety were presented by officers from the Navy and by representatives from the sister Services as well. The Event also provided a platform for discussing a number of strategies, concepts and procedures to enhance flight safety. A comprehensive analysis of aviation accidents/ incidents of the preceding year was also undertaken in the course of the Seminar.

The Seminar was also an opportunity for awarding the Aviation Rolling Trophies. INAS 342 was adjudged the Best Naval Air Squadron and INAs 336 was the Runner-up. Chief Guest Vice Admiral Anup Singh gave away the Trophies to the Commanding Officers of INAS 342, Commander Sanjay Deswal and of INAS 336, Commander AS Dhillon. Speaking on the occasion, the Commander-in-Chief emphasised the importance of flight safety in military operations. He also brought out how aviation has become integral part of almost all naval and military operations in the fast changing warfare scenario, and he exhorted all aviators to ensure that flight safety is not compromised at any stage. The Seminar was attended by a number of senior Officers including Rear Admiral SM Vadgaokar, Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Air), Rear Admiral Sudhir Pillai, Flag Officer Naval Aviation.

The seminar was preceded by a Naval Flight Safety Meeting that was held on Tuesday, 03 Nov 09. The Meeting chaired by Rear Admiral Sudhir Pillai was attended by Commanding Officers and Flight Safety Officers of all the Air Stations of the Navy. A number of issues ranging from the analysis of aviation incidents/ accidents, precautions to prevent recurrence and other relevant matters were discussed during the Meeting.
