A Guide to eating out in Vizag

VASUNDHARA (Hotel Dolphin)

This eating joint is presently not working.

Is it our imagination or is it true that the atmosphere in a vegetarian restaurant is more serene? This certainly is the first thing that strikes one on entering Vasundhara, the vegetarian restaurant and one of the three restaurants of Hotel Dolphin, the other two being Horizon and Green House.

Somehow Vasundhara seems to always have just the right number of customers making it seem neither too crowded nor deserted.

The menu is of the simple, no-frills type with not too many items on offer. Just the kind of menu you need when you are clear in your mind as to what you want or when you are in a rush.

It is divided into four sections :

The Breakfast and Snacks (South Indian) section that is served from 0700 to 1100 and 1700 to 2100 that contains the staple idlis, dosas, utapams etc.;

The Lunch & Dinner section (1100 to 1500, 1900 to 2200) consisting of Naans / Rotis, Fried Rice, Vegetable curries and, of course, the Thalis.

The Snacks section (served from 1500 to 2100) consist of Spring Rolls, Cutlets, Samosas and Pakodas with a section for Ice-creams and fresh fruit juice.

Whatever you have here, do not forget to round off your meal / snack with a cup of coffee that is simply superb.

The items are very reasonably priced with the most expensive item costing a whopping Rs. 75/- and with the lowest coming in at Rs. 15/-. The average price of a dish is Rs. 15/-.

The décor is simple yet tastefully done. The service is friendly and efficient. There are two Assistant Managers who work on shifts. We spoke to Mr. Johnson who does a fine job of making you feel at home.

Tip : Try to get a table waited on by Mr. Naidu or Mr. Pandian.

When we last visited they had live music ( a flautist, a tabla player) which was quite good. Even otherwise, the piped music is not too bad (of the kind that you get on Indian Airlines flights when takeoff is delayed and the pilot is trying to distract you, without much success).

The one thing that we certainly didn't like was the management doing the math for us and imposing a fixed Service Charge of 10 % of the bill, which doesn't give one much of a chance to express either appreciation or disapproval of the service (or the lack of it).
