Woman ‘harassed’ for giving birth to polio-affected child:

A 24-year-old woman approached the Superintendent of Police Koya Praveen, alleging harassment by her husband and in-laws for giving birth to a child affected with polio.
Lavanya of Madhurawada was married to Sattibabu of Narsipatnam in 2010 and the couple was blessed with a child about two years back. The child developed polio during infant stage and since then she alleged that she was subjected to harassment by her husband and in-laws.
On April 5, she had approached the police at Narsipatnam police station and lodged a complaint under Section 498 A.
Alleging that the police had not taken any action, she had approached the SP under the advice given by some human rights activists.
Though she was not able to meet the SP, as he was not in office, the DSP Y.B. Ramana had spoken to her and the Narsipatnam police station inspector.

According to the DSP, the complainant’s husband was called by the Narsipatnam police for counselling and he had not responded. “We have instructed the officers concerned to immediately take up the counselling and take necessary action,” Mr. Ramana told The Hindu .
