Theft of iron blooms: gang busted:

The Harbour Police team arrested six members of a gang who were involved in stealing six loads of iron blooms, each load weighing about 23 tonnes, from port area, here on Thursday.
The arrested were identified as Chilla Seetha Reddy (26), Nadigatla Venkata Kranthi Kumar (27), Nayana Santhosh (22), Nayana Suryanarayana (30), Pudi Yerrayya (21) and Gundapu Yuva Kishore (25).
Recovered
In total, the gang stole about 138 tonnes of blooms, worth about Rs. 25.20 lakh and the police recovered 23 tonnes, worth about Rs. 4.2 lakh, and cash to the tune of Rs. 4.06 lakh.
According to ACP (Crimes) Phalguna Rao, Srivalli Shipping Company was awarded the contract for transporting iron blooms from Visakhapatam Steel Plant to Port area and from Port area to the shipment spot.
The members of the gang, led by the kingpin Chilla Seetha Reddy, observed the movement of the transport operation and hatched a plan to steal the iron blooms in collusion with the drivers of the tractor trailers, promising them huge amount of money.
They befriended a couple of drivers and devised a modus operandi, said the ACP.
Modus operandi
As per the modus operandi, the drivers after picking up the load at VSP and getting the relevant papers stamped and signed by the VSP and Srivalli officials at VSP, would come to the Srivalli stockyard located near the Ambedkar Statue Junction in the Port area.
On reaching the stockyard, the driver would park the trailer outside and walk into the stockyard to get the papers stamped as delivered. “He would then come out and drive the trailer away instead of going inside the stockyard. In this was they stole six loads, and had disposed of five loads, since last December,” said Mr. Phalguna Rao. But luck ran out for the thieves on February 19, when a trailer driver by name Killi Srinu was caught while trying to steal in the same fashion. On interrogation, the driver spilled the beans and the gang was arrested and one load of blooms and the cash were recovered on Thursday, said the ACP.
