673 gram gold seized from three passengers at airport

Air Intelligence Unit, Customs, of Vizag International Airport recovered 673 g of gold jewellery worth Rs.21.87 lakh from three passengers, following medical supervision at KG Hospital in Vizag city. The three passengers who arrived from Kuala Lumpur to Vizag by Air Asia Flight AK-083 were intercepted at Vizag airport for allegedly trying to smuggle the yellow metal on Saturday (27-10-2018). On inquiry, the passengers said that they were not in possession of any dutiable goods. As the response was not satisfactory, the officers conducted a search with a metal detector which indicated the presence of some metal objects in their body. On persistent interrogation, all the three passengers admitted that they have concealed gold. All the three passengers were then admitted to KG Hospital in the city so that the gold hidden in their stomachs could be brought out. The officials finally recovered the gold from the trio in the form of 24 balls, chain links and cylindrical bars. The Customs officials said that their investigation has revealed that the gold articles were ingested in two cases and inserted inside the rectum in another case to avoid detection by customs at the time of clearance. Further investigation is under progress.
